Hi Will, I lived in DC for many years (or Annapolis, actually) and I still do a majority of my consulting in the Washington, D.C. area. So, it's always nice to re-connect with some local IAs in the area.

Would love to do it. My whole pitch is that we while we talk about the human as really important in HCI, in practice we spend more time designing the interface than understanding the human. Cyberpsychology is basically an intro psyc book for computer scientists who only took computer programming and no psyc.

And please, wash that perfume off. It smells of coriander, gin, and desperation. May also be related to rash getting weepy

Hoping your rash is cleared up by the time RedUX rolls around.

Less Formal Summary:

Will Evans weighs more than 80.3 kg in the morning. He's American with thick dark brown wind swept hair (except when its held in place by various salon products). He nearly became an investment banker when he left school (Occidental College). For three reasons, he didn't.

* He found excitement in computers, art, and ideas;
* Investment Banking is just a fancy name for accounting;
* He hates accounting.

His favorite wine would be a bottle of Penfolds Grange Hermitage. Ideally a 1976, but let's not get too picky. The Grange Hermitage is red of course. His favorite other colour is black. He doesn't know why.

OK, OK. For a creative that's a bit of a cliché. To say he is passionate about ideas is to say that Warren Buffett has a mild, fleeting interest in money. His first love may be for creative ideas but this preoccupation extends to ideas from and for every area of human and non-human activity that involves complex information systems. In other words, all-inclusive. Ideas are what make life worth living for him.

Design Advice from Stephen Colbert

@Armano tweeted this today, from kip/bot/blog
From a NY Times article about Jon Stewart’s status as one of the most trusted journalists in America, a nice quote from Stephen Colbert about the craft of satire. It can apply to so many things where you are looking at the difference between amusing and brilliant, mockery and satire, good and great:

“We often discuss satire — the sort of thing he does and to a certain extent I do — as distillery,” Mr. Col… Continue

The bad usability calendar

"It´s here; a new edition of the (in)famous Bad Usability Calendar. The past three calendars have all been successful in distributing examples of bad design around the world. Check out fresh examples of exaggerated use of fancy Web 2.0 design, cover flow, personalization, pull-down menus and more..."

I love the Web 2.0 design.

Coffee Patterns.

[Note: I wrote this about writing, and influences, but it could just as easily be read in the context of our craft, which is interaction design. Replace books with designs, and authors with designers, and the sentiment and argument remain the same. I hope someone finds it interesting.]

Coffee Patterns.

I rub my finger along the half dissolved sugar clinging to the lip of my coffee cup. I look you in the eye; I give you the "I'm completely earnest" look that you never believe. I… Continue
