Design makes a tremendous impact on the produced world in terms of usability, resources, understanding, and priorities. What we produce, how we serve customers and other stakeholders, and even how we understand how the world works is all affected by the design of models and solutions. Designers have an unprecedented opportunity to use their skills to make meaningful, sustainable change in the world—if they know how to focus their skills, time, and agendas. In Design is the Problem: The Future of Design Must be Sustainable, Nathan Shedroff examines how the endemic culture of design often creates unsustainable solutions, and shows how designers can bake sustainability into their design processes in order to produce more sustainable solutions.

Design is the Problem explains:

1. How sustainability isn't as difficult to understand and address as many would have you think
2. Several of the leading frameworks and perspectives on sustainability
3. How to insert sustainability into the development process that you're already using
4. The many, practical strategies that make the products, services, and events you design and develop more sustainable—right now

Mission

The UX Book Club Washington D.C. seeks to enhance the abilities and knowledge of user experience professionals from information architects and interaction designers to visual designers and usability specialists to augment their understanding for excellence in UX practice, ixd design theory while building a passionate local community.

Subjects of interest to this club span design theory, design research and user experience research practices and processes. The books include the strategy and business of design, UX design theory and history, methodology, usability research, and the ethics of UX professionals, while networking and having some fun.

In this first year, we will read, review, and discuss 8 books. Moderation and discussion lead will rotate throughout the group so that everyone eventually gets a chance to frame the conversation and contribute to group learning.

Not really sure how to send a message to all those that rsvp'd. Can someone send out a message in case folks aren't checking this page and let them know it's canceled?

sounds good. let's cancel. i certainly wasn't a fan of the book either. :)

although it did educate me more as a consumer and i'm even now more conscious about the products I buy... but how this applied to me in my professional life? Not really sure...

Will, we can use the space in our office here for future book clubs - just keep me posted of future book club events. :)

I both liked and disliked good portions of the book, but just can't step out because of deliverables and managing to some deadlines. Feel free to go forth with the plan if you can, and if you decide to vote against meeting this evening, just post here in the comments so no one ends up stranded, along having wasted time going to the venue.

I'm having doubts now. Haven't finished the book yet, and have forms to finish filling out.

Kim,

Can you guys run the show without me? I am getting hammered at work and can't run out this evening for the book club, I need to put out fires this afternoon.

We (NAVTEQ) will be here... If you have any problems getting to the 4th floor - give a ring on my work mobile 312 286 2294. :) Even if it is a small group, I guess it doesn't hurt to have the gathering... I assume it's on unless I hear otherwise as well.
